The Steelton Mennonite Gospel Mission began in 1936 in a three-story storefront building at Myers and Conestoga Streets on the West Side of Steelton. On the corner of the building a lighted cross sign proclaimed the Good News that “Jesus Saves”.
Frank Hertzler, a local farmer, sold produce in Steelton in the post-Depression years and was concerned for the many unchurched families he met. He and Samuel Longenecker presented the need to Eastern Mennonite Missions and received encouragement and support to begin services in the community. Young adults from nearby Mennonite churches helped teach Sunday School in the early years and many continued to be involved in the church throughout their lifetimes.
Our church reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity that is unique to the Steelton community and the Harrisburg area. This diversity enriches our congregational life as we learn from each other and share together in Christ’s mission to the world.
In 1965, our present church building was built on the east side of Front Street at North 3rd and Jefferson Streets. The West Side community was destroyed in the flood of 1972. The lighted sign is long gone, but the message is still the same: “Jesus Saves!” Visit us on a Sunday morning and you will be warmly welcomed.
